Message from the Chair
Welcome to the Ontario Energy Board. The Ontario Energy Board is the regulator of Ontario's electricity and natural gas industries. On August 1, 2003, the Ontario Energy Board Consumer Protection and Governance Act, 2003, came into effect, giving the OEB the opportunity to do its work more efficiently and effectively.
The Board will focus its work on protecting the interests of consumers by regulating pragmatically the electricity and natural gas industries, and, where appropriate, promoting viable competitive markets for electricity and gas.
On August 1, 2003, the Board became a self-financing Crown corporation. A management committee, made up of the Chair and two Vice-Chairs, is responsible for overseeing the management and operations of the Board.
The Board's job is to ensure that energy rates are fair, reasonable and timely, and to secure the reliability of electricity and gas service in Ontario. Reducing barriers to effective competition, while promoting the rights and responsibilities of all players, will protect consumers and inspire public confidence. We will endeavour to consider the interests of all stakeholders in performing our duties in the public interest.
Howard I. Wetston, Q.C.
Chair & Chief Executive Officer, Ontario Energy Board
