Understanding Regulatory Codes
The Distribution System Code is an important regulatory document that all generators should read. It sets out guidelines for electricity distributors and the processes they need to follow in connecting generation facilities.
For example, a distributor is required to provide some basic information free of charge to assist generators in evaluating whether their prospective generating facility could be accommodated on the distributor's system. That information includes a description of the distributor’s system with an up-to-date system schematic map showing major distribution and sub-transmission lines, transformer and distribution stations, and so on.
Specific sections of the Distribution System Code that are most relevant to small generators are:- Section 6.2, Appendix E and Appendix F
Here you’ll find information about the connection process. Section 6.2 describes the connection process, with further detail set out in Appendix F. Appendix E contains the standard form connection agreements. The connection process varies with the size of the generator; Appendix F describes processes for four size classes of generator, from micro-sized (under 10 kW) to large size generators greater than 10 MW.
Concerns, Complaints, Questions
Call the OEB’s Market Operations Hotline at 416-440-7604 for additional general information on the connection process or for assistance in resolving issues with respect to a specific connection. The OEB has processes in place for dealing with inquiries and disputes. Our role is to ensure distributors connect generators to the distribution system in accordance with the legislation and other regulatory instruments.
